Editor's Note

By Kristen Hutchinson

Issue 25, Current Issue | FALL 2024

This is the last issue of Luma Quarterly. I am so sad to see the demise of thisgroundbreaking journal that has showcased media art and film, with a focus on Western Canada, from 2015 to 2021. Lindsay Sorell was the founding editor from 2015 to 2018, and I edited issues 14 to 25. We have published articles from 97 writers, interviews with 32 directors and artists, and 12 audio, video, and photographic essays. We have reviewed film and television from Canada and beyond, and art exhibitions, projects, and collectives primarily from Western Canada.

I am grateful to be given the opportunity by EMMEDIA and CSIF to edit this 25 the publication milestone. Thanks also to the editorial committee for this issue: Suzette Chan, Katie Wackett, and Shumaila Hemani.

For our last publication, we have focused on BIPOC creators. From an interview with Fawzia Mirza about their directorial feature film debut The Queen of My Dreams; to a showrunner on creating Smell da Coffee, his first TV series about Afro-Canadians living in Calgary; to a review of Laura Anzola’s Voices exhibition; to an interview with media artist and cultural worker Vicki Van Chau; and a review of Marilyn’s Cooke’s film No Ghost in the Morgue, there is much to explore and discover.

I wish there was more sustainable financial support for Canadian art publications so Luma Quarterly could continue with our mission of expanding critical dialogue about media art and film from a Western Canadian perspective on an international platform. A huge thank you to all our contributors throughout the years, the members of our editorial and advisory committees, our sponsors and supporters, and to EMMEDIA and CSIF. I hope you enjoy this last issue!
